Although some people go to hockey games to see the fights or unsuspecting spectators get hit with a stray puck, many come to the watch the talented players. Canadian Sidney Crosby, captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins, has made a particular impact on hockey enthusiasts. Not only has he brought success to a struggling team, but he has made hockey history with his many skills.
Sidney Crosby demonstrated his hockey capabilities at an early age. At just age 3, he learned how to skate. When he was 14 years old, he led his team, the Dartmouth Subways, to the national championship where he earned both the MVP Award and the Top Scorer Award. Sidney Crosby cemented his reputation when he became the fifth Canadian player to participate in the World Junior Hockey Championships at age 16.
Sidney Crosby began his career with the Pittsburgh Penguins on July 30, 2005, when he was picked first overall in the 2005 National Hockey League Entry Draft (also known as the Sidney Crosby Sweepstakes). He made hockey history when he became the youngest player ever to earn over 100 points in one season. Just after only several months, legendary player Mario Lemineux appointed him the alternate captain of the Penguins.
On May 1997, he became captain of the Penguins, the youngest hockey captain in history. To add to his many achievements, Sidney Crosby became the youngest player to receive the Art Ross Trophy and the Lester B. Pearson Award, and become a member of NHL's First All-Star Team. To demonstrate his passion for the Penguins, he agreed to a $43.5 million contract that would guarantee his commitment to the team until 2013.
Sidney Crosby's stardom has led to the theft and auctioning of many of his jerseys. For example, in 2005, a baggage handler stole his jersey from the World Junior Hockey Championships. However, although several more clothing articles have been stolen, Sidney Crosby has used his popularity to raise money for worthy causes. He sold his jersey from his 3rd NFL game for $21,010 to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
In addition to his charitable efforts, Sidney Crosby has created his positive reputation by revitalizing the Penguins. Although criticized sometimes for his youth, he has proven to be one of the highest ranking players in the NHL. As a creator of many new records, Sidney Crosby provides spectators with one more reason to watch hockey games.
